I just want to wish all of my flist a very happy and safe Thanksgiving! I hope whatever you do and whoever you celebrate with, it's a memorable one!

It's going on almost a year now that I've been in this funk with my writing. I have ideas, I have things started, but every time I open Word I just sit there and stare at the screen.

Sooo, I'm going to see if any of you has a prompt - a song, a word, a sentence, a setting, a time period, a sequel to something of mine you've read. Really, any prompt, I'm just hoping for something that will inspire me as I've come up with zilch for so long now.

Success - how do you define it (OT)

OT and a bit of introspection for the day, sorry, but I am curious if anyone wants to take the time to respond:

I had my ex ask me recently why, me the one with the college degree is "not as successful" as he, a convicted felon...

I, however, while I don't consider my current situation ideal (who does, really), I don't deem my life unsuccessful to this point. I may not make as much money as he does, but I made the decision to have a baby 19 years ago in lieu of grad school, which my BA in Theatre required me to have in order to do anything with it. I have chosen over the years to take perhaps lesser paying jobs that allowed me to A) be closer to home so that I could spend more time with my family and B) allowed me the flexibility of being able to take time off for things I needed to do for my family. While living in Chicago, surely I could have found a much higher paying admin job in the city than the one I had. But by the time I was done paying for the commute and everything else, coupled with the fact I'd never have seen Stephanie it wasn't even an option for me.

I've been in the working pool for 27 years now and I have never been fired, never been released, laid off or anything of the kind. I have left all of my - count them - 8 jobs during those 27 years - on excellent terms with excellent references following me to the next job. I had a boss at a company in Chicago give me $300 a month out of his pocket so that I wouldn't have to get a second job. He didn't want me exhausted coming to work every day (or not showing up at all). Surely if I wasn't a worthwhile employee to begin with he wouldn't have cared let alone been so generous with me. And, to me, that's what I strive to do in my life. Money is necessary, sure, but I'd rather be happy doing what I'm doing than make more money and be miserable.

So, it got me thinking - what do you define as being a success? Is it a set amount of money? Does money figure into the equation at all? If you had a long, happy, fruitful life and lived it out on a shack, hanging ten on Maui would that be success to you?

Just curious.

Can't Stop the Serenity 09 MPLS

Minneapolis' Can't Stop the Serenity event will be held August 13-15 this year. The 14th and 15th are just showings of the film it sounds like without the auction/raffle, etc. So, if you're looking for all of the goodies, the 13th is the day you want.

I'm going to try and get there, but just not sure I can swing it this year. A 10 day vacation in Boston was great, but hits the pocketbook so we'll see if I've recuped by then.

Flooding in Fargo / apckrfan's OK for now

I've gotten a couple of emails from people who know I'm in Fargo, so I'm posting this here. I appreciate the concern!

We've already broken the historical mark set back in 1897 of 40.1 feet and the river is still rising. Evacuations in our sister town of Moorhead have escalated to a much larger chunk of houses - for those familiar with the area all house South of Main and West of 8th Street South clear down to 52nd Avenue South. (One of the houses my grandpa built is among those, I'll have to check on it when this is over.) Some residents in South Fargo are being evacuated. Hospitals have been moving patients. Roadways are closed, people are asked to stay off the roads unless they have to go out so that emergency personnel, city personnel, workers and volunteers can get through quickly. The mayor has asked businesses to take the day off. I just got a call from McD's that we're closing for the day.

River is expected to crest at over 42 feet (possibly 43') sometime tomorrow. And then these sandbag dikes will have to hold that water back for up to a week or more. They're saying some of the colder weather may help a little because precipitation will come in the form of snow not rain, but there is rain forecasted later on in next week.

Our house is OK. Hubby's worried about drains backing up in the basement but that's about it. Our house isn't even on a map of any "concern zones" at the moment, so that's good. He used "the girls" bathroom upstairs today to shower. He's been working 13-14 hour days this week hauling sand to "sandbag central". He leaves at 6:30am, gets home after 10pm basically to eat and sleep, goes back out again.

Tips for battling writers block...

I haven't written much of anything in close to 2 months now. I don't know what my problem is as I've never experienced this before. Not to this degree at least. Usually, there's something I can at least work on if nothing else inspires me. Not the case at the moment. Ideas are there, I open a blank document and nothing. I've re-read my WIPs, hoping that will spur the drive for me to write more. I've re-read some older fics, hoping that would give me a new idea for something else in that fandom. Nothing.

Very frustrating, esp. considering I had a ficathon fic due 11 days ago and I'm no closer to finishing it today than I was a month ago.

On the upside, I've gotten a lot of reading done because I can't stand sitting at the computer feeling inadequate because words escape me at the moment.

So, what do you do to combat writer's block?

*Yeah, I chose 6 from this decade. If I was forced to drop one, I guess it'd be The 4400. I had to really think about including JEKYLL, which I thoroughly enjoyed and will begin hunting down Nesbitt's other works because of this one. But it was only 6 episodes, so hard to get a handle on whether it's really an all-time favorite as compared to some other ones. And Fringe is turning into one of my favorites, but it's still really early to tell. Heroes. Well, loved Season 1, liked Season 2, not thrilled with Season 3 so far. So, I honestly wasn't even tempted to list it here. Same with LOST.

OT: Thoughts, prayers, etc. please

I don't normally ask for this sort of thing, but I am today. My oldest's boyfriend's father died Saturday night in a car accident. He was only 43. He was pronounced dead at the scene. I know my daughter's boyfriend is devastated and my daughter is taking it real hard as well (it brings up memories for her of when my son died when things like this happen). There's never a good time to lose someone, but less than 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and 6 weeks before Christmas is just a sucky time for this to happen.

So, any thoughts, prayers, well wishes, or just good vibes. Please send them Fargo's way as I know not just the boyfriend but the entire family could use them.
